Summerland Gets Historic Monument Signs
9/3/2009
Signcraft teamed up with local artist Peter Soehn, designer Robert Inwood, and the District of Summerland to fabricate, sculpt and install two very large "Welcome to the District of Summerland" signs at the north and south entrances to Summerland along Highway 97. This exciting project took approximately 3 months to complete. Through the process Signcraft had to coordinate the efforts of several subcontractors, including urethane foamers, fibreglass workers, concrete workers, and powdercoaters.

Signcraft was initially approached by the designer, Robert Inwood. Basically he asked us if his idea was possible and if Signcraft could head up the project. After some thought and discussion with close company friend and artist, Peter Soehn we decided that with his help we would be happy to take this on. Early conversations included talk of concrete and stucco to form the background and shape for these large signs. As you can imagine that would have meant that all of the construction and sculpting would have had to be completed on site. This is where I asked Peter for his opinion. He suggested we use a wooden inner structure as the base, then spray the urethane foam on top to create the shape of the bluffs, and finally seal the entire structure with fiberglass. This type of construction would allow both signs to be built in Kelowna and trailered to Summerland for installation.

Once the foam and fiberglass shapes were complete we then rolled the entire form with an exterior latex base coat mixed with walnut shells to add some sandy texture. We then sprayed three graduated coats of color to add dimension to the bluffs. Finally we sprayed both signs with a very flat clearcoat to eliminate any unnatural glare.
When the paint was dry it was time to install the lettering. For this we chose to use pin mounted CNC cut aluminum, powder coated to match the District of Summerland logo colors. We stood the lettering off from the form 1.25" to add even more dimension to these signs.
Finally we were ready for install. This part was easy with the exception of transport. Once in Summerland we met the crane at the site and simply hoisted the signs onto the concrete bases provided by the District of Summerland and bolted them in place.

We would like to thank The District of Summerland, Robert Inwood, Peter Soehn, Inland Spray On, and Fibernology for their support on this memorable project. We look forward to to applying these techniques to future projects and cannot wait for the next opportunity to present itself.
Best Regards
